Day 1 - Film and Images
INTRO:
Discovering a connection to a film you have seen. Write down the title of a film that resonates - and add several bullet points about WHY you have a connection to that specific film.
Digital Video I
Let’s Start By Making A Movie.....First Step is Pre-Production:
Country: You can go anywhere in the world right now – where are you going?
-1st activity: What do you want to do when you get there?
-1st meal: Describe it. Details.
-1 musician(s) who defines you & why you love their music
-1 book that captures something about you and why
-1 movie that resonates with you and why
-3 objects that define you
-Create a movie with three distinct shots. What function does each image serve?
Here is a model:
1) Long Shot: Day. We SEE the top of a small convertible car open to REVEAL a father and daughter. Two small suitcases and several fishing rods in the back seat. We HEAR the engine start and music BLASTS from inside the car.
2) Medium Shot: Day. A beach. The sound of waves and gulls overhead. Father and daughter cast lines into the ocean.
3) Close-up: Night. A campfire on the beach. Salmon on the grill.
Written assignment: Take the material you wrote about the country you want to travel to and create three images that COMPRESS TIME visually.
Turn written work in at the beginning of the next class.

Week 2: Discuss - several of the shots from the "Country" project. Collect all student work. Amity as a Prison - Amity as a Country Club - Visuals Class works in production groups with a cut-out of viewfinder and does "scouts locations" through out the school for three images that capture their assigned topic. One student acts as the DP - another writes down: -the shot: EST, LS, MS, CU, ECT -the tone of the shot What is an image? What does the expression mean: "A picture is worth a thousand words." Visual Literacy: An image can do one of three things: 1. Move the story along 2. Reveal something new about a character 3. Create a mood or emotion. Screen first visual sequence from E.T. -Respond to each new images with adjectives - try to capture the tone of the image. -Discuss Visual literacy - and decode the images screen in the opening sequence of E.T. Here are some images - respond to the image with one word. Go with your gut. Don't think. Speculate what you think the image does in the structure of the film. |

What questions should you ask yourself to decide on the opening shot?
What one moment stands out during the summer?
What are you trying to communicate?
-Collaborate with a partner and then each present your image to the class.

How to Critically Evaluate a Film + 5 Elements of Film

-Screen opening of "Hugo." Visual analysis of images that:
1. Move the story along
2. Create a mood, tone, setting
3. Reveal something new about a character.
Due: Use visual writing and create three shots from your "Let's Start By Making a Movie project. Print out your work. Present it to the class and then turn the work into JF.
-Forms and Protocols for videotaping in school, using equipment.
Review Parental consent forms. Students review forms and protocol with parents/guardians. Return signed forms to JF.
-Discuss the "DNA" of film structure: Goal versus Obstacle = Resolution....New Goal...
-Create a sample story using this model.
-Students use the model to create three frame sequence of their morning.

Template for a Two Column Shooting Script (click)_
All students pitch their projects. 15-20 seconds: Hook us with your idea and try to "sell" us on your project. Avoid detailed descriptions of your story - rather give us an overview of your project. What is your vision for this shooting project? Why are you making it? By the time you pitch again on Wednesday - have a clear idea of your vision. Re-read Joe Minasi's pitch for an excellent example of a director's vision for a project.

Monday March 9:
Full pitch. Hook; overview and several key scenes or moments that you visually describe and captures your project and most important your vision for the piece.
All students work on their pitches and present to class. Analysis. Begin to develop key images that will be part of the 6 shot video.

-Production teams go over filming procedures with shooting logs by capturing 3 shots each in the studio and adjacent hallway.
